Kyle Daniele March 7, 2009 Mr. Tufaro How we know is a question epistemologists speculate about endlessly. They are not interested with what one knows, but how knowing is achieved. With each philosopher we have studied, each has had a different viewpoint. John Locke believed our minds are empty and the one way to gain knowledge is through sense experience. David Hume proposed our perceptions create views of the world and in theory we obtain knowledge. Finally, René Descartes’ renowned statement “I think, therefore I am” was the basis of his ideas. By reading Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude and watching Blade Runner directed by Ridley Scott, in these two works we can see epistemology is an underlying theme. One Hundred Years of Solitude is the story of the rise and fall of the fictional town Macondo and the Buendía family name through seven generations. José Arcadio Buendía, along with his wife Úrsula, establish the town Macondo in hopes that they will live in tranquility forever. The town flourishes due to José Arcadio’s knowledge of simple farming techniques until the arrival of Melquíades and his band of gypsies. Melquíades has seen the world and knows there is more to it through science and inventions. José Arcadio is in awe at what can be done by machines and strides to create some to do the town’s work for the denizens. However, José Arcadio loses his mind trying to create and never returns to a stable state before his death. He represents mankind as they both yearn for more and will not settle for the lowest of the low. Melquíades mentions:
