Edward Pierz SOC 452  9/27/09 Media Journal #2  Our rapidly developing technical society uses vast amounts of resources.  Recently public opinion has turned away from the use of fossil fuels and other non  renewable resources, or at least what we perceive as renewable recourses. Most  people have focused on technologies, some more exotic than others, to mitigate the  damages that our lifestyle creates. I chose to specifically focus on the issue of electric  cars and the materials that are used to produce them. The first article that I reviewed, “shortage of rare earth metals overblown” sends  a very different message than my previous articles. The author, Bradley Berman, spoke  with individuals in the “high tech”  industry such as Prabhakar Patil, CEO of battery- maker Compact Power and former chief engineer of Ford's hybrid program. He believes  that a shortage of rare earth elements is one of the lesser obstacles facing the “green  technology industry in the next decade. Patil believes that technology will be developed  that does not use rare earth metals out of necessity if the price increases.  Specifically  he mentioned AC induction motors which do not use any rare materials and are much

cheaper to produce, albeit at the cost of marginally reduced performance. According to Berman, Toyota does not believe it will have an issue securing raw  materials for it electric and hybrid vehicles.  It is admittedly a concern for Toyota as  evidenced by the following quote, "This is something that we have to address as more  manufacturing of electric vehicles and hybrids come on line,   "Does that mean next  week? No, but it becomes a legitimate thing to consider when you talk about production  in the order of millions over several years." said Jana Hartline who is the communication
