Texas Midterm Election - Republicans will most likely have 54 seats in the U.S. Senate - Democrats had more seats to defend since most seats up for election were democrat - The worst draw for democrats best for republicans - 13 undecided seats as of right now, Democrats have 225 seats in the house (218 is needed), so Democrats will be majority. - Republicans have always benefitted from political gerrymandering - Democrats should’ve won the house but lost due to political gerrymandering - Republicans had the advantage of computer software programs which could maximize their boundaries to which they can gerrymander. - Republicans control 38 states while Democrats control only 12, and they also have more advanced software programs which give them an advantage. - If you look at how Americans vote, America is actually a liberal country, but based on the fact that Republicans require more land so have more seats, and because they are more likely to vote, they have a higher voter base. - In 2016, Trump won Texas by 9% - In 2014, there was a 20% margin - Beto loses by 2 1/2 %; Republican margin of victory is closing up. - Houston is Democratic territory; Houston takes up majority of Harris County - Harris County Judge voted out in the election: Ed Emmet - Overall, 1.2 million votes in Harris County - Fort Bend County also went blue (56%), Travis County (74%) blue, El Paso (Beto’s hometown, 78% blue). - The reason many Democrats voted in Texas was due to their dislike of Trump - Florida’s Broward County ballot: foul play and delays because of the ballot design - In Harris County Democrats voted 58% for Beto
