Warrior aristocracy used military campaigns to get wealth King was considered indispensible intermediary b/w people and gods. Royal family and aristocracy worshipped ancestors. Bronze=authority Cities aligned with n. star in a grid plan with gates opening in cardinal directions Orientation of buildings= Feng Shui Writing was set in pictograms and phonetic symbols. Few educated elite learned it Different lang. spoken today can read the same text King was considered indispensible intermediary b/w people and gods. Royal family and aristocracy worshipped ancestors They believes their ancestors looked out for them and had a connection w/god. Shang rulers usually used divination to determine the will of the gods. They made ritual sacrifices when they dies; woman, officials, soldiers,etc Made pottery on wheel and used kilns Hammered soil to become like cement and used as walls. Buildings were also made out of these. 2000 BCE bronze Bronze vessels used in ritual sacrifices. Lots of bronze in Shang tombs, etc Bronze was used for weapons and decoration, chariot fittings, instruments. Chariot good for war Jade, ivory, and mother of pearl used for jewelry, carved figurines, and decorative inlays. They started the production of silk from silkworms on mulberry trees. Bronze vessels used in ritual sacrifices. Lots of bronze in Shang tombs, etc Bronze was used for weapons and decoration, chariot fittings, instruments. Chariot good for war Grew millet, raised pigs and chickens, and used tone tools. Many cities served as capitals. Imp. Anyang. Shang cities were center of political control and religion. Cities contained palaces, administrative buildings and storehoused, royal tombs, shrines of gods and ancestors and gods, and houses of nobility. Shang originated in the Yellow river valley, present day Henan Warrior aristocracy —greatest pleasure- warfare, hunting, exchanging gifts, feasting, and wine- filled revelry. Nomads of the steppe and desert were “given a demonstration of Shang power” and used as slave in the city
