Notes Chapter: 9 Shreya Maddireddy P Politics I Intellectual R Religion A Art and Architecture T Technology E Economics S Society Culture: The Franks - Charlemagne 1 st to bear title of emperor in W Europe in over 300 years -E Europe called Byzantine Empire -inherited rule from Romans -1 ruler prevented empire from splitting up but territorial losses sapped strength [Arabs attacked] -Empire accepted Muslim control of the lands captured after Crusades -Fought Turks on N+S+Slaves in N -2 brothers [ Cyril & Methodius ] & their followers perfected new writing system, Cyrillic , which came to be used by Slavic Christians adhering to Orthodox [Byzantine] rite & this marked beginning of Greek & Roman competition for Slav allegiance -Christianity=official religion -Islam challenged religiously & political -schism developed b/w Orthodox & Latin church -saints began to be former peasants instead from cities -religious art featured stiff but captivating figures against gold backgrounds & influenced W Europe -music affected chanting used in Latin church -greatest architectural monument: Hagia Sophia [“Sacred Wisdom”] cathedral in Constantinople -farmers used slow oxcarts & light scratch plows while W Europeans developed more advanced techniques -barter replaced $ transactions in some areas -emperors set prices, organized grain shipments to capital, & monopolized trade in luxury goods such as Tyrian purple cloth -other cities in empire suffered b/c of focus on Constantinople -area called medieval [“Middle Age”] b/c b/w Greco- Roman civilization & Renaissance -suffered through the bubonic plague [a.k.a. “the plague of Justinian”] -# of urban elite shrank & rural landowners & aristocrats importance increased -power organized by family began to rival power from class-based office holding -family-based military aristocracy emerged by 11 th century -women began to be left confined more & had less freedom & were veiled outside home & only spoke to males of household -visitors from W saw gradual decline of empire General Notes P Politics I Intellectual R Religion A Art and Architecture T Technology E Economics S Society Culture: Kiev an Russia (900 -1200 CE) -some navigable rivers, tundra, temperate forest, steppes, etc. - Khazar kingdom centered on mouth of Volga River -Varangian [Viking] princes & their druzhina [military retainers] lived in cities while Slavs farmed unlike W Europe -princes traded & fended off enemies -Vladimir opened lands to Orthodox clerics -political power came from trade, not landowning -when church finally triumphed it played greater role in political & economical affairs -church wrote using Cyrillic alphabet in this area -farmers practiced shifting cultivation on their own lands; burned forest then lightly scratched surface w/ a plow then would move to new section when land lost fertility -In 980 Vladimir I returned from exile to Kiev w/ band of Vikings & made himself grand prince of empire: placed 6 gods his Slavic subjects worshipped on a temple on a hill & tried to
