Chapter 20 Notes I. Japanese Reunification  a. Civil War  i. 3 major changes: internal + external military conflicts, political growth and strengthening, expanded  commercial + cultural contacts (also applies to China + Russia)  11. In 12 th daimyo had his own castle town, small bureaucracy,  allegiance to hereditary commander of armies, the shogun, as well as Japanese emperor residing in capital city  (Kyoto). In late 1500s, Japan experienced prolonged civil war that brought separate Japanese islands under  powerful warlords. Hideyoshi was the most successful of these warlords. Hideyoshi wanted to launch an attack  12. Korean  & Japanese languages are closely related, but dominant influence on Korea is China. Yi dynasty (1392- 1910) was model of Confucian state. The Koreans countered Japanese fleet by using turtle boats (ingenious  covered warships). The Japanese countered the attack by brutal punitive measures. Hideyoshi conquered  Korean peninsula  made peace after Hideyoshi's death.  IV. In the confusion of the Japanese withdrawal, the Korean yangban (nobility)  claim to so much tax-paying land that royal revenue  L  by   2/3.   Manchu forces invaded Korea in 1620   became tributary state.  b. Tokugawa Shogunate- Japanese military government established by Tokugawa Ieyasu  i. New administrative capital in Edo (Tokyo). Trade along roads between Edo  often, good roads + ocean transport linked 3 out of 4 main islands of Japan. Shogun paid daimyo in rice +  they paid followers in rice as well. Rice had to be converted to cash. Domestic peace of T okugawa era  forced warrior class to adopt itself to growing bureaucratic needs of state. They became important  customers for merchants dealing in silks, sake (rice wine), fans, porcelain, moneylending, etc. Wealthy  merchant families cultivated close alliances  wI  c. Japan  i. Direct contact  wI  Europeans (mid-16 th  century) presented Ja;>an  wI  new opportunities  major impact was Japanese military tech. Within 30 years of 1 st Portuguese (1543), daimyo were fighting
