Level 1 – Specific Behavior Level 2 – Relational Rules Level 3 - Personality Be able to define and give examples of each of the five types of conflict. Type 1 – Parallel (Yes vs. No dilemma) Type 2 – Displaced (A distractive conflict) Type 3 – Misattributed (Blaming the wrong person) Type 4 – Latent (Absent conflict) Type 5 – False (A conflict that should not exist) Chapter 2 Be able to identify the criteria that are used to judge competence, how they interact, and give examples of each. Effectiveness – goals to measure communication Appropriateness – pursuing personal goals must take into account the expectations of others (communication rules). Four different categories of rules governing conflict communication: Positive Understanding – apologize and listen to the other Rationality – no anger or raising your voice Conciseness – get to the point quickly, be consistent Consideration – don’t make the other feel guilty, don’t mimic or be sarcastic The Relationship between Effectiveness and Appropriateness – getting what you want by getting along with others Implications of Judging Competence performing prohibited behaviors is likely to draw heavier sanctions than is failing to perform preferred behaviors What types of goals influence interpersonal interaction, what influence do they have, and how do they relate to each other? Instrumental – resources we wish to acquire from another person Self-presentation – personal image we want to present to another person Relational – relationship we wish to achieve with another person Transactive goal – formulated and emerge during and after conflict interaction.
