Literary Analysis Sample: In the poem “A Work of Artifice,” Piercy uses symbolism, metaphors, and point of view to illustrate that when in a relationship, women never reach their full potential as individuals because they are confined within gender roles. In this poem, Piercy uses the symbol of the bonsai tree to represent women who allow themselves to be subjected to these gender-specific expectations of beauty. Write your thesis here: _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ __________________ Thesis: Focus on relating a central idea or important insight from the work. Therefore, you want to address what the author is saying about a universal theme or idea. The thesis is your central argument so it should be debatable and reasonable. Make sure you use the appropriate form (referring to the work) and you include the specific literary elements in list form.

Literary Analysis Sample: Society tells us that women should look a certain way, and unfortunately for women, many follow these expectations. Men commonly believe that a woman should be perfect. Women change from being naturally beautiful to artificially beautiful. Artificial beauty kills a woman’s identity because she changes her views about herself. For example, in the poem, the gardener says “It is your nature to be small and cozy, domestic and weak” (Line 12-13). A woman will follow what’s expected of her, even if it’s not her nature. Not every woman wants to be the typical housewife, but being confined to this role causes a woman to be disconnected spiritually from herself. A complete loss of self will cause her life to be dominated by regrets.
