Total points = 20. 1. a) Explain the difference between the development toolkit genes (say HOX genes) and housekeeping genes. (3 points) The housekeeping genes are responsible for normal functioning of any cell. They are constitutively expressed no mater of the cell type, time in development, location in the organsms . ... (example RNA polymerase). Developmental toolkit genes on the other hand are expressed only at certain times and places in the embryo during development. b) Explain the difference between maternally required genes and zygotically required genes in animal development. (3 points) Maternally required genes are dependent on the maternal genome only and their expression towards development is localized in the egg before fertilization occurs. For example, Bicoid is expressed in the mother and deposited in the egg at a certain location creating a concentration gradient which is important for the future expression of genes in
