TM: 02/11/2006 International Workshop: Engineering Education for Sustainable Development Tsinghua University, Beijing, 31 October – 2 November, 2006 Organised by: Tsinghua University United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Chinese National Commission for UNESCO Supported by: China Association for Science and Technology Chinese Academy of Engineering World Federation of Engineering Organizations Sponsored by: China Association for Science and Technology, UNESCO, Alcoa Foundation Report and Recommendations of the Workshop An “International Workshop on Engineering Education for Sustainable Development” was held at Tsinghua University from 31 October to 2 November, 2006. The Workshop was attended by 150 high-level engineers and engineering students, including 30 overseas participants, and was opened by Vice Minister of Education, Zhang Xinsheng, chair of the UNESCO Executive Board. The idea for the Workshop was discussed at the World Engineers’ Convention, held in Shanghai in November 2004 (WEC2004), with the theme “Engineers Shape the Sustainable Future”. A “Shanghai Declaration on Engineering and the Sustainable Future” was produced at WEC2004. This Declaration proclaimed that “Engineering and technology are vitally important in addressing poverty reduction, sustainable development and the other UN Millennium Development Goals, and need to be recognized as such.” The Declaration called upon the engineering community, governments and international organisations to promote engineering for our sustainable future. The Workshop was also organized as an engineering input to the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, (2005-2014, with UNESCO as the lead agency for the promotion of the Decade), hence the title of
