Two of the big Pan-Indian movements are heavily influenced by Lakhota culture and activism. • Pow wows (dances) have Lakhota style music. • Even Native American Church has Lakhota spiritual advisors, although it has a southern origin. • AIM has been focused on Lakhota issues. The first director was Lakhota. Pan-Indian movements are largely a post WW II phenomenon. The exposure of Indian soldiers to the world off the reservation changed the way Indians perceived themselves.

Traditional dancing is generally local styles of dance. Fancy dancing is pan-Indian, very elaborate and athletic, including leaps and moves borrowed from martial arts. Traditional dance costume reflect local styles of traditional dress, modestly elaborated. Fancy dance costumes are (like the one above) highly elaborated, brightly colored, and very expensive.

The prizes for the men’s and women’s fancy dance winners are the largest. There are many contemporary Indians who go from one pow wow to the next through out the pow wow season (generally late spring-early fall, although one can now find pow wows year round).
