Elder, PhD, RN, FAAN [email protected] HPNP 4221 (352) 273-6359 Office hours: By appointment only COURSE DESCRIPTION This course provides the student with an introduction to public health theories and models as they relate to nursing to form a basis for understanding the health status of family and community systems within a social context. Emphasis is placed on community assessment and primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention strategies that enhance the health of individuals, families and aggregates. The focus is on the integration of the individual, family and community systems. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Utilize nursing knowledge, theory and research findings with knowledge from the humanities and sciences to analyze the unique characteristics of community health nursing. 2. Apply the nursing process and The Community as Partner Model to analyze the needs of individuals, families and aggregates 3. Apply epidemiological principles and data in describing and analyzing the health of communities. 4.
