Events in the Origin of Life: Four Views: Special Creation (from god), Spontaneous Generation (from things), Panspermia (from outerspace), and Biogenesis (from pre-existing life) Biogenesis: life evolved on earth; 4 stages: abiotic synthesis of organics, abiotic synthesis of polymers, origin of self-replicating molecules, formation of pre-cells Biotic monomers (organics) can be produced abiotically: amino acids, sugars, fatty acids, nucleotides [Miller]. Polymers: amino acids to proteins, fatty acids to lipids, simple sugars to complex sugars, and nucleotides to nucleic acids [monomers + energy source = polymer] Self-replicating monomers is hard to prove (chicken and egg) Formation of pre-cells: liposomes and coacervate droplets Q = The scientific view of the origin of life on earth: holds that living cells arose from abiotic (nonliving) source Q = One of the most difficult things to understand in the abiotic origin of life is how a genetic system capable of both storing genetic information and precisely replicating itself could arise. The solution to this puzzle may lie in RNA because: some RNA can both store genetic information and also act as an enzyme. Q = If you were told that a particular molecule was an amphiphile, which of the following would be true? It would possess both hydrophobic (lipid soluble) and hydrophilic (water soluble) groups. Q = If life on earth developed through abiotic processes, which of the following is most difficult to explain? How nucleic acids both served as a genetic system and acquired the ability to recreate themselves without enzymes. Q = How might the major scientific questions about the abiotic origin of life on earth be resolved? RNA can both store genetic information and in some cases be autocatalytic, i.e., able to act as an enzyme. What is Science: A body of existing knowledge, based on: verifiable observations, repeatable measurements, and synthesis (thing). Also, a hypothesis-driven process by which: observation, hypothesis generation, prediction, and experimentation produce an increase in the body of knowledge (process). Scientific Method: Observations Question Hypothesis Prediction Test (If it supports hyp, make additional predictions and test them; if it does not support hyp, revise hyp or pose new one) Direct Experimentation vs. Indirect Experimentation Hypothesis vs. Theory: Theory : repeatedly verified hypothesis applicable to many related phenomena, generalizable, solidly supported by evidence
