History 128 Fall 2009 Harvey Mudd College H. Barron LAC Riggs Conference Room MW 2:45-4:00 IMMIGRATION, ETHNICITY AND RACE IN AMERICA This course focuses on the peopling of the United States by a variety of racial and ethnic groups. We will consider the experiences of the different groups, but we will also be concerned with the meanings of that diversity for the nation as a whole, particularly with respect to its cultural and political dimensions. We will also discuss the effects of class and gender on this history. The class will take the form of a round-table colloquium and will meet twice a week. Students are expected to participate actively and effectively in class discussions and will be responsible for five reading responses, one short paper, two essay exams based on the readings, a field work presentation, and a term paper. All work must be completed in order to pass the course. The following books are required reading and are available for purchase at the Huntley Bookstore: Thomas Dublin, Becoming American, Becoming Ethnic: College Students Explore Their Roots .
