Chapter 15 – Sexual Orientation: Gay, Lesbian, Bi, or Straight Gay Pride Day every summer cities in North American hold a special day to commemorate the first time a gay, lesbian, and transgender faught back against police harassment in June 1969 in New York City’s gay district. Gay liberation was born The first gay liberation group in Canada was formed in Vancouver in 1970 Sexual Identity: One’s self-identity as homosexual, heterosexual, or bisexual. Sexual Orientation: A person’s erotic and emotional orientation toward members of his or her own gender or members of the other gender. whom we are sexually attracted to and also have the potential for loving. Homosexual : A person whose sexual orientation is toward members of the same gender. The word “homosexual” comes from the Greek root homo meaning man. Heterosexual : A person whose sexual orientation is toward members of the other gender. Referred to as “straight”. Bisexual : A person whose sexual orientation is toward both men and women. Lesbian: A woman whose sexual orientation is toward other women can be traced to the Greek poet Sapho, who lived on the island of Lesbos around 600BC. she is famous for her love poetry she wrote to other women. How Many People Are Gay, Lesbian, Bi, or straight. 2% of men and 1% of women are exclusively homosexual in their sexual behavior and identity. 4% of both men and woman have had a same-gender sexual experience in adulthood. 4% of men and 2% of women have experienced sexual attraction to members of their own gender. 92%of men are exclusively heterosexual 7-8% of men have had at least one same-gender experience in adulthood. 95% of women are exclusively heterosexual 4-5% of women have had at least one same-gender experience in adulthood. Attitudes In Canada, heterosexuality is the norm, which causes stereotypes for non-heterosexuals. This may lead to discrimination and hate crimes 32.1% of Canadians indicated that homosexuality constitutes immoral behavior. but almost all Canadians (92%) are in favor of equal rights for gays and lesbians. However Canadians are more divided on the issue of same sex marriage 53% in favor 46% in favor of same-sex couple adoptions. Homophobia : A strong irrational fear of homosexuals; negative attitudes and reactions to homosexuals. Some scholars like to refer to it as homonegativity because it is more common that there is prejudice behaviors and negative attitudes towards gay 1 1
