November 13, 2007 Confederation Part 3 Responses Canada West favored the deal with majority of votes Canada East o People alleged that the scheme was not confederation but a legislative union o Allegation that confederation was just done to create a railway and ensure movement of Canada east to Canada wes t o Thought that confederation would raise tensions with us The us would become scared of growing Canada and possibly invade o People in Canada east opposed this because they failed to consult the people Elitist government o Cartier turned the allegation that Americans would become fearful of Canada o In Quebec the clergy was quiet- no real opinion- indirectly gave approval Maritimes- NB and NS- fear factor and economy o Charles tucker who would become premier led pro confederation forces o Joseph Howe- in after math of confederation vote became premier Was anti- confederation Vigorously anti- confed.- went to Britain to plead his case which was not acknowledged
