Monday, September 18, 2007 Austria- Hungry Ancient empire 1866- Austria-Hungarian empire defeated by Prussia Prior to this assumption that Prussia and AH were equal powers Austrian empire reconfigured itself to be the Austrian-Hungarian empire o 1 ruler- Kaiser Wilhelm o 2 legislatures Up to 1867 Austria had run this land Power was now to be shared resulting in 2 parliaments Many people are Slavic people(Serbs, poles) Austria- Hungry began frustrated with their situation and formed an alliance with the Germans o At the turn of the century Austria-hungry was Germany’s only ally. For a long time it appeared that Francis Joseph Hapsburg was the glue of A-H. Franz Joseph was crowned emperor before AH was even formed(1848) o When world war one broke out in 1914 he was 84 years old o Ruled A-H for 68 years o Outlived all his sons His wife was assassinated in the streets in Geneva At world war one he had no heir but his nephew Franz Ferdinand
