Sarah Ohlinger Dr. Koness NFS 443 20 October 2009 Lab # 5: Anemia Case Study (1) After entering in KM’s age, weight and height her BMI was 24.2. This indicates that she is in the normal to upper range for her body weight. Her weight range should be between 101-136lbs for a woman who is 5’2”. According to the Hamwi formula, her ideal body weight should be approximately 110 lbs. (2) According to the REE calculator, KM’s resting energy expenditure is 1,280Kcals. With an activity factor of 1.4, her energy requirements are approximately 1,792Kcals. After calculating her estimated energy expenditure using the Harris Benedict Equation, her caloric needs is approximately 1,393Kcals. With an activity factor of 1.4 her energy expenditure was around 1,950Kcals. Using the Harris Benedict Equation, her Kcal needs are slightly higher than that of the REE calculator. The difference between the two methods of obtaining the two methods of obtaining the caloric information was approximately 160 calories. (3) According to the lab values, KM is suffering from iron deficiency anemia. KM’s hemoglobin count is low (9g/dl) while the normal range is between 12-16 g/dl. Since hemoglobin is the iron containing pigment of the red blood cells, this test infers that her iron count is low. Her MCV results are also low (72 fL) while the normal range

is between 80-95 fL. MCV relates to the mean corpuscular volume, or size of the red blood cells. KM’s test results are low, which indicates microcytic red blood cells, which most likely is due to iron deficiency. Serum ferritin is a component of the lab test used for
