GEL 17 – Earthquakes & Other Earth Hazards – Fall 2009 Tuesday and Thursday 2:10-3:00 Geidt 1001 Instructor: Prof. Peter Schiffman [email protected] Office: Earth and Physical Sciences Bldg Room 1133 Office Hours: Wednesday and Thursday 3:10-4:00; by appointment Geology 17 - This course focuses on four major hazards: earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides & floods. We’ll look at a variety of disasters and catastrophes from around the world, and we’ll pay special attention to the threat of these hazards to Californians. Textbook Natural Hazards and Disasters (2006) by Hyndman & Hyndman The images & captions are particularly important in a class like this. The book is on reserve in Shields Library. Outlines of notes for individual topics/lectures will be posted on the class SmartSite (GEL 017 001 FQ 2009) within a day or two of class time. These are relatively comprehensive, but are best understood in conjunction with class attendance and readings from the textbook.
