Acceptance level, AQL Minimum standard for satisfactory production 10-12%  defectives common in garment production Goal under 5%, sometimes even 0 Maximum number of defects that is allowed within a  sample before the lot is rejected Percentage defective based on number of defectives  and size of sample – used for materials and non- sewing processes Defects per hundred units (DHU) based on number of  defects per size of sample.  More expensive than  above

Inspection choices No inspection – dangerous in terms of  customer  relations 100% inspection – costly, and still does  not catch 100 percent of defects VFC guests, Chinese 100% inspection vs.  their statistical sampling had  equal success;  cheap labor in China

Sampling types Random = equal chance of any item being  selected, across sizes, colors, etc., so  may miss some variations Representative = all styles, colors, sizes –  but may not be random Constant percentage of every shipment,  10% often, but may be too many for small  lots, not enough for large Systematic = selected equally by location,  or at time intervals
