GEOL 1 LEC What is geology? The study of Earth as an interconnected set of systems. Deep time Oceans and continents Natural hazards Planetary exploration Energy, water, resources Climate change Landscape appreciation Plate tectonics Super continent Pangea Layers of rocks as records of ancient environment, climates, and life. Ice Ages- ancient climates and modern climate change LEC 2 Deeptime: such as hundred million years. Origin of Earth 4.6 bya Big Bang 13.7 bya Nebula-clouds of gas and dust in space that mark the birth place of stars. 75 % of entire universe is composed of H. Solar Nebula Hypothesis: proposes that the planets were formed from the disk of gas and dust that surrounded the sun as it formed.

The nebula condenses into a swirling disc, with a central “protosun” surrounded by rings. Revolving masses of gas and dust not collapsed into the evolving proto-sun become trapped in stable orbits, forming bands of concentrated material. Thermo nuclear fusion = star Acceretion- is a process of how planets form. Planets are born hot. Planetesimals- baby planets Gas giant planets are bigger because it is cooler. Planets are spherical because they are hot and malleable into an efficient sphere shape. Meteorites can be carbon dated. Meteorites are left over rock and metal that didn’t become part of a planet or moon, and etc. Sun, meteorites, and Earth have different amounts of silicon. Magma ocean in the center of the Earth. Fe forms the core of all planets. Silicon and oxygen form rocks! Heavy stuff in the interior and the lighter stuff in the outer edges. All planets go through the process of differentiation. Silicon + oxygen = silica which is the main, component of rocks. Volcanoes are the heat release valves of the planets.

Volcanoes have life spans. Lec. 3 Planets, moons and space debris form as a by product of star formation from nebula. They are ‘leftover’ that didn’t get incorporated into a newly formed star at the center. Centripedal force-lighter weight outward and denser in the middle.
