10/15/08 1 An altruistic act (behavior) is one that increases the fitness of another individual (the recipient) at the expense of the altruist (actor). Recall that Hamilton showed that altruism can evolve if the altruist is sufficiently closely related to the beneficiary, in accordance with Hamilton’s rule.
