10/22/2009 1 Coach Mark French Basketball Practice Planning Practice Planning Concepts You will get (in games) what you emphasize in practice Players learn best by doing – talk less, allow your team to do more. Seeing is believing – use video whenever possible Allow sufficient time for warm-up – then encourage constant intensity Every drill should be a rebounding drill Teach a few core drills for each important area – then rotate those drills regularly Don’t waste your players time in practice – be well organized yourself (and assistants) Maximize reps in practice – minimize time spend standing in line to play Break down concepts into parts, and build up to whole, within practice segments After fundamental skill levels are established, use competitive drills regularly Keep the flow of practice going – standing around listening to you talk is counterproductive. Give feedback on the fly (don’t stop the whole group to talk to one player)
