Unformatted text preview: Gender and Development • Sex-Role/Gender Role: attitudes, self- concepts, conduct expected of a person in a given society based on his/her sex/gender. Expectations differ in terms of norms, beliefs, institutions • Socialization is multiply determined and influenced • Issues of establishing biological sex/gender • Chromosomal: • Gonadal (sex organs): • Hormones are present in both: males have more androgens, females more estrogens. Levels appear to have some influence on brain organization/behavior • Morphologic: • Gender Identity: • Historic bias regarding gender roles attributed to evolutionary reality that women bore/raised children and men were masters of their destiny out foraging. • Gender bias in occupations: some greater flexibility, but still see “illusory correlation” present • Male: • Females: • A child’s earliest notion of male/female comes from parents. • Parents treat, dress and give differentiated toys and expect different behaviors from sons and daughters. • One study had ratings based solely on gender. Looked at one-day old infants matched on weight, length and APGAR scores. – Daughters rated as – Sons rated as • Developmental Vulnerabilities: from conception boys more vulnerable; increased sensitivity to disease in utero; more likely to have developmental problems (mr; adhd) •...
