Unformatted text preview: Grandparents and Siblings (Pets too…) • Grandparents: – Increasing number of children are living with their grandparents and other relatives (44% increase from 1980s-1990s) – Reasons for grandparents raising grandchildren Grandparents may be caring for grandchildren with or without the parent in the household If in household it complicates issues of responsibility for caregiving African American’s are twice as likely to be caregiving grandparents • Stressors and Rewards of Caregiving Relationship for Grandparents • Research indicates that primary caregiving grandparents find the role has both positives and negatives. • Identifying variables which provide support for caregiving grandparents and their grandchildren is critical • Evaluated role of social support: • See increased role of support group programs “Grandparents raising grandchildren” • Increased level of activity of grandchildren decreased stress • Grandparents caring for children report: • Highlights from the Reading: – 11% of grandparents had primary role for raising grandchild for > 6 months – ½ took place when child was an infant – 72% before the child was 5 – 2/3 raise child of a daughter – 50% provided care for > 3 years – % were caring for grandchildren as well as their own children that were still minors • Radin, Oyserman and Benn • Grandfathers and teen mothers with children under age 2 • Positive relationship with father influences academic ability and social competency. • Grandfathers became more nurturing as they aged.
