Unformatted text preview: OUTPATIENT INSTRUCTIONS AFTER SEDATION You/Your child has received ___________________________________________ for sedation. MEDICATION NAME You/Your child may experience any of the following: • Alert one minute, then drowsy, or sleepy the next minute. Sleepiness may last 4-6 hours. • Dizziness and/or lack of coordination. • Occasional irritability throughout the day. • Poor appetite for a few hours. • Nausea and/or vomiting. REST / ACTIVITY • Rest • Pay special attention to those of physically active ages. (for example: rolling off furniture, falling when walking, etc.) • No driving for 24 hours after anesthesia. DRINKING AND EATING: • Do not eat, or if child do not feed until completely awake. • Begin feeding with clear liquids such as water, apple juice, jello, popsicle, or koolaid. Advance diet as tolerated. • If you/your child vomits, stop eating for 30-60 minutes then gradually resume clear liquids. • Start solid foods when tolerating liquids well. WHEN TO CALL THE DOCTOR: • BREATHING PROBLEMS • PROLONGED WEAKNESS, SLEEPINESS • FREQUENT NAUSEA & VOMITING If unable to reach the doctor and you feel it is an emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest Emergency Room.
