U.S. chose its battles carefully Depended on strength of moderate nationalist mvmts vs strength of communist mvmts or threat of communist overthrow o Korean conflict was viewed as local until 1950 when took center stage Later Stalin found to be manipulating both sides of Korean conflict so U.S. became involved o Alliances in Asia U.S. bilateral treaties w/ indiv countries in Asia SEATO: south east asian treaty org (not as advanced as NATO) So Asia weakened in terms of regional security
