IR of Pacific Notes 1/28/09 Alternative explanations for Chinese foreign policy o The liberal triad and China’s integration: democracy, international organizations, and economic interdependence Countries that share these characteristics are usually peaceful toward one another Democracies rarely if ever fight one another (but they may fight other countries) China doesn’t fit into this liberal triad However, it has liberalized a great deal What does this mean? o More people engaged in discussion of int’l affairs o Success of regime has been built on economic performance, so what does it do during economic downturn like now? o Internet has also complicated things for the state even though the state has sophisticated filtering mechanisms o China does have a certain number of low level elections (at village and township level) o However, no political competition with communist party!
