To geologists, a rock is a coherent, naturally occurring solid, consisting of aggregate of minerals, mineral matter, organic materials or a mass of glass. What is a Rock? Genetic (how formed!) ClassiFcation of Rocks: Igneous rocks - rocks formed from the solidiFcation (cooling) of molten rock Sedimentary rocks - rocks formed by weathering, mechanical sorting, and cementing together of pieces of pr-existing rocks and/or organic materials - or by precipitation of minerals from ±uid solutions Metamorphic rocks - rocks that have been transformed into new rocks by the effects of increased temperature and pressure Genetic (how formed!) ClassiFcation of Rocks: Common Rock ²orming Minerals
