The central purpose of the course is to provide a critical appreciation of mental models for viewing, analyzing, and attempting to manage organizations. Organizations of all sorts are pertinent in our lives not least because they most often provide the settings in which people work. Most of you too are likely to develop your careers in organizations. Moreover, much of organizational analysis and theorizing is geared towards helping managers to run organizations or sub-units within them more effectively. So a considerable amount of the issues to be covered and discussed in this course will have managerial implications and should therefore be of interest to those who intend to pursue management careers. Intended Learning Outcomes: Course-specific skills. By the end of this course, a student should be able to: (a) describe what a theory is; (b) identify basic organizational theories; (c) identify the main contingency elements; (d) identify important actors and institutions in a focal organizations environment. Discipline-specific skills. By the end of this module, a student should be able to: (e) identify the relevance of management sciences in present day management practice. Individual and key skills. By the end of this module, a student should be able to: (f) develop analytical and critical thinking skills. Course Material: Most of the reading material for this course comes from an edited volume of foundational texts of the field: Michael J. Handel, The Sociology of Organizations (Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage, 2003). It is available for purchase at the University Bookstore and on reserve at the Information Center. Page 1 of 8 Another piece of required reading (for week 2) is from Aye Buras book Devlet ve adamlar (letiim, 1997), available on reserve at IC. A useful supplementary reading in Turkish is rgt Kuramlar, edited by A. S. Sargut and . zen (Ankara: mge, 2007).
