Unformatted text preview: Homework #1 As many have said, Elvis Presley and The Beatles redefined popular music in the 19505- 19603. Both performers successfidly introduced countless new elements to Rock and Roll, whether similar or different. Presley’s most noticeable, “grunt and groin” style was perceived by his audience as the “bad boy” type, where as The Beatles connected with their fans through a more “androgynous” feel. By looking at Presley’s “Hound Dog” and The Beatles “It Won’t Be Long”, we can evaluate their differences and similarities towards their female fans through their lyrics and song structure, and the tempo of their music. Elvis Presley and The Beatles speak to their female fans, but in different ways. In “Hound Dog”, Presley lyrics “You ain’t nothing but a hound dog, crying all the time...” describes his condescending relationship with a woman, which in a way sends a negative tone to his female audiences. The rest of the lyrics “. . . .and you ain’t no friend of mine” were elaborated from the main verse to fully convey his relationship with this woman. In contrast, the Beatles send their loving tone to their female audiences. First, they described how “it won’t be long...” until she comes home. Then, they conclude with a positive happy ending vibe “now you’re 5 coming home’ . In both songs, these verses are the backbone of the song. Although the song is elaborated with other short verses that only last a little over two minutes, it always comes back to this chorus. In fact, part of the main lyrics is in the title. It is also worth noting that both choruses begin the song, rather than the verse in today’s music. Both performers produced extreme energy in their records. However, “Hound Dog” has a faster beat than “It Won’t Be Long”. Both songs carry a catchy beat that attract their female fans. ...
