Energy is exchanged between the system and its surroundings by the motion of the walls . Expansion (Δ V > 0): The system performs work ( w < 0). Compression (Δ V < 0): Work is performed on the system ( w > 0). Work w has units of energy (J) 5 Interaction of the system with the surroundings: heat q ( T sys > T surr ): Heat q flows from the system to the surroundings ( q < 0).
