Jazz 2 The emergence of larger ensembles. Within the bands, the development of sections of instruments instead of solo instruments. (There were soloists within the sections, however. But when not soloing, they were a part of the section and played with it.) The sections corresponded to the instruments in the early jazz bands: Fletcher Henderson and Don Redman were the most prominent arrangers to start writing arrangements for bigger bands. Wrote a famous and influential “new” version of “Dippermouth Blues” called “Sugar Foot Stomp.” Anticipates Big Band Swing. •the larger ensembles meant that jazz became more “arranged,” that is, written out and not wholly improvised. There were predetermined figures (little melodic gestures) that sections would play in the background behind solos and at the breaks (pauses) in the solo; these figures are often called riffs . They are an identifying characteristic of big band arrangements. Further, these arrangements exploited the contrasting instrumental sections by having them play in
