1 UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering Spring Semester 2008 Instructor: Filip C. Filippou CE 121 – Advanced Structural Analysis Homework Set #5 (due Feb. 29, 2008) 1. Problem (10 points) 4 4 6 1 2 3 4 a b c λ 30 λ 30 Figure a – simple frame 4 4 6 1 2 3 4 a b c d λ 30 λ 30 Figure b – simple braced frame Figure a shows a simple frame and figure b shows the same frame reinforced with a brace. The capacities of the structural members are as follows: the column element a has plastic flexural capacity of 150 units and very large axial capacity, the girder elements b and c have flexural capacity of 120 units and very large axial capacity, the brace element has plastic axial capacity of 30 units. You are asked to determine the collapse load factor λ of the two cases for the given loading. To do so proceed as follows: 1. Because the axial forces in elements a, b and c do not play any role in the collapse load

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
