1. CO 2 -rich blood is pumped from the heart into the lungs through the pulmonary arteries. 2. In the lungs, blood CO 2 is exchanged for O 2 . 3. O 2 -rich blood is carried back to the heart through the pulmonary veins. 4. O 2 -rich blood is then pumped to body tissues through the systemic arteries. 5. In tissues, arteries narrow to tiny capillaries. Here O 2 in the blood is exchanged for CO 2 in tissues. 6. Capillaries then widen in systemic veins, which carry CO 2 -rich blood back to the heart.
