The Basic Context: During the Black Plague 7 women and 3 men escape to the country w/servants Afternoon stories: Everyone tells a story for the Queen/King of the day First day Pampinea (No theme for stories); Fourth day Boccaccio (Theme:relationships that end in disaster); Ninth Day Emilia (No theme for stories) Florence, Italy 1348 Frame Narrative: The frame narrative is about the 10 people who escape the Plague into the forest outside the city with their servants. Their goal is to live only thinking of happy things and entertainment, avoiding anything to do with the city or the death and sadness taking place there. Each one of them gets a day to reign as queen/king over the others. During the hottest part of every day they sit in the forest and tell stories. Also, within the embedded narratives are even smaller embedded narratives of dreams which the characters in the stories are having. Embedded Narrative: There are many embedded narratives within this reading. They are stories told by the 10 living in the forest. Examples (Dream Narratives): Day 4; Story 5 Three merchant brothers hire a Pisan, Lorenzo, to direct their affairs. Lisabetta, their sister, falls in love with him and they have a clandestine
