Josiah Willard Gibbs (February 11, 1839 – April 28, 1903) was an American mathematical physicist who contributed much of the theoretical foundation for chemical thermodynamics. As a mathematician and physicist, he was an inventor of vector analysis. He was the first person in the United States of America to receive a PhD in engineering (Yale). He was one of the earliest theoretical physicists in America and perhaps one of the earliest theoretical chemists. The Gibbs Professorship of Physics and Chemistry was founded in his name. (a) In order to determine the temperature of a 40 wt% Ni-60 wt% Cu alloy for which α and liquid phases are present with the α phase of composition 30 wt% Ni we need to construct a tie line across the α +L phase region that intersects the liquidus line at 30 wt% Ni. This is possible at about 1240 o C. (b) The composition of the liquid phase at that temperature is determined from the intersection of the same tie line with soulidus line – which his around 48 wt%.
