A wider span of control, responsibility, authority and a greater degree of  autonomy than a team leader is what distinguishes a first-line manager from a  team leader.  First-line managers plan work looking several weeks or months  ahead and have a greater knowledge than team leaders of specific requirements of  customers or suppliers. 2. How important is competence in the core managerial skills for the different types of  managers? Competence in the core managerial skills for the different types of managers is  loosely important in everyday life.  Henry Mintzberg found that managers  fulfilled three major roles while performing their jobs more than the core  managerial skills.  These roles are interpersonal, informational, and decisional  roles. 3.
