Essay #1: Marriage and Money

Write on one of the topics below or devise your own, if you clear it with me before you begin writing.
: offer a title for the essay, but no title page. Put your name, the date, the course and the topic number you
are answering on the top left or right hand corner of the first page. Number each page of your essay except the first
one. Follow MLA format for quoting text.
You must use at least two critical sources in your paper.
These may be
from a collection of essays, from a long scholarly work, or a journal article. The Chaucer Review
, available in the
library and online, is a particularly good journal to use. General reference texts such as encyclopedias may be used,
but do not count as a source for this paper. Web sites, reviews, and abstracts will not count as critical sources.
However, you may search online for sources and use printed sources that are also on the Internet, through sites like
Project Muse or JSTOR. Librarians, tutors in the Writing Center, or I can help you with this
Cite your primary text, along with your secondary sources for your Works Cited page.
Finally, if the research for your critical exercise is relevant, feel free to use that material for this paper.
