Psychology 152 – Class Notes – 9/30/09 Stimulus control – chicken pulling a string to fire a gun when the man’s profile left the center of the target SD = absence of profile in front of target S(delta) = presence of profile in front of target Stimulus control – * Objects in environment are NOT signals Differential punishment exists as well as differential reinforcement Fading – a procedure that can be used across many dimensions (but we will only concern ourselves with 2). Auditory (hearing) Visual (sight) Olfactory (smell) Tactile (feel) Gustatory (taste) FADING : The new stimulus eliciting a response is increased in intensity while simultaneously decreasing in intensity the former stimulus eliciting the same response. Auditory is converted to visual stimulus through fading There is a way to train stimulus control: Differential reinforcement o Reinforce a given behavior in the presence of an SD o NOT reinforcing in the presence of an S(delta) Differential punishment works the same way as differential reinforcement We use differential reinforcement to establish stimulus control. To use differential reinforcement, we need to use extinction. What do you have to use with differential reinforcement? Extinction : NOT reinforcing S(delta); any behavior You HAVE TO DESCRIBE the BEHAVIOR – JUST WHAT THE SUBJECT IS DOING . Example: the rat is “ agitated agitated ” is just a LABEL for the collection of behaviors associated with “agitated”
