Psychology 152 – Class Notes – 10/7/09 READ PAGES 6-8 IN LAB MANUAL Schedules of reinforcement Schedules of consequation is a much more accurate description of these schedules MO – establishing and abolishing reinforcers Schedule-induced polidipsia Antecedent events: History MO SD Response – A single member of the operant (set of behaviors) SR – Reinforcer stimulus SP – Punisher stimulus Now we are talking about everything as a whole and how the ABC’s fit together ABC Antecedencts, Behaviors, and Contingencies Schedule of reinforcement (schedule of consequation) – The Antecedents, Behaviors, and Consequent events (contingencies). Describes the relationships between the basic parts of the three part contingency Describes the relationship between the three entities (A, B, and C’s) There are literally thousands of ways to arrange the different components of the A, B, C’s

Simple schedules of reinforcement – divided into subcategories Non-intermittent (continuous) schedules o Continuous Reinforcement (CRF) – Each and every response is going to be reinforced (or consequated reinforce, punish, extinction). Every time a lever is pressed, water is delivered to the rat happens every time o Extinction (EXT) – No response is reinforced (or consequated). Nothing happens. This fits with the SP and SR bubbles on the three part contingency Just because you as the scientist don’t arrange any source of reinforcement in the test chamber, that doesn’t mean reinforcement is NOT present – it could be an accidental source of reinforcement. Intermittent (not continuous) schedules o Response-based intermittent schedules - Two of the more frequent: 1. Fixed ratio (FR) – A schedule is programmed to deliver reinforcement following the emission of a fixed number of responses. a. Fixed ratio of 5 Response-based this refers to the number of responses that are required before reinforcement is delivered i. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 responses and THEN reinforcement is delivered. b. FR 27 27 responses required before reinforcement i. The numerical value is called the “schedule parameter” ii. All temporal and numerical values SCHEDULE PARAM 2. Variable ratio (VR) - Schedule of reinforcement in which the number of responses required for reinforcement changes. It changes after each presentation.
