Psychology 152 – Class Notes – 10/19/09 Schedules of reinforcement can be used to establish aversive circumstances We measure the dependent variable by measuring the rate of responses Independent variables are: Antecedents: - SD - MO - H Consequences: - SP - SR Dependent Variables: - Response - Operant The rate of response should be scaled based on what species your working with: Rat will hit the lever at one rate Pigeon will peck the button at another, HIGHER rate Variable time consequent event doesn’t occur at the same time each trial COMPLEX SCHEDULES OF REINFORCEMENT (there are 6) Complex schedules of reinforcement - The combination of two or more simple schedules Analogy: take a simple system such as TinkerToyz there are holes in each of the wheels There are many wheels There are many sticks The sticks and wheels can be arranged into infinitely many shapes Thus, putting the simple system together becomes COMPLEX
