Psychology 152 – Class Notes – 11/11/09 Operant conditioning versus respondent conditioning The types of behavior controlled by each type of conditioning are different. Respondent conditioning – the type of behavior people engage in. Involuntary behavior. Reflexive behavior like: Knee-jerk reactions Vomiting Salivating Respondent conditioning involves involuntary behaviors that people engage in. You don’t have much control over the behavior Operant Condition – Voluntary behavior Voluntary behavior is the result of selectionism from environmental influences. Behavior is selected Respondent conditioning There is a difference as well. Outcome is the product of environmental influences and history – CHECK THIS Interpretation – behavior is the result of environmental influences and history Respondent and operant conditioning occur in the environment. They are real things, features of the environment both historical and contemporary (present) and can be manipulated. The point is : we have an explanation for behavior without using non-physical entities (mental activity) to complete the explanation. No scientist says mental events don’t exist, but they say that if they do exist, they are NOT AMONG THE CLASS OF CONTROLLING VARIABLES. They appear to occur ALONG WITH events, NOT BEFORE EVENTS Skinner suggests that when you feel things, he is saying that you are FEELING YOUR BODY. You are feeling your body react to certain body respond to stimuli. RESPONDENT CONDITIONING – these are all interchangeable (the same): 1. Pavlovian conditioning 2. Classical conditioning
