Biology 330 – Class Notes – 11/12/09 Diversity Equitability Use the H’ equation to find diversity H’ to calculate diversity can be used as evidence of contamination ECOSYSTEM POWERPOINT Why do we care about diversity? Ecosystem services argument A partial list of Ecosystem Services – these are free services that are provided by intact ecosystems. Argument for the preservation of ecosystems – we want to protect the free services. Production of biomass for food, fuel, and fiber o Food – occurs naturally, but we pay someone to go harvest it o Purification of air and water o Mitigation of droughts and floods o Generation and preservation of soils and soil fertility Bees pollenate flowers and trees – results in fruit – free service. o Detoxification and decomposition of wastes o Etc… Asterionella formosa and Cyclotella meneghiniana these are competing for the same nutrients (phosphorus and silicon) If only one of these species lived in Lake Michigan, it would grow to carrying capacity given the limited resource IDEA: 2 species create more biomass community diversity is 2 species rather than just 1 These 2 species are important for supporting fish This DIVERSE COMMUNITY makes it easier to capture more fish as a result These two species coexist – they are limited by either phposphorus or silcon at different times, so they don’t compete they coexist

Tilman’s Minnesota prairie plots Prairie p 147 different plots that are nitrogen limited 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, or 24 species of prairie plants o Each quadrat is replicated 3 or 4 times 25 native species Pick a species at random of the available 24 Pick at random a pair of species 25 times. o A and F 24 species in the 24 species plot 12 species in the 12 species plot They measured plant cover – the amount of surface area dominated by plant and the amount of nitrogen that was still available (because it was not used). SPECIES RICHNESS GRAPH FROM PPT – LOOK AT IT NOW when species richness is LOW, not much biomass is produced When 24 plants are planted, you get the MOST biomass So if we are interested in the production of biomass for any one of the free

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
