Calibration Every NMR system has its own calibration that is built into the instrument. This includes an automotive system that calibrates itself (Bigler, 96). Sample Preparation The main objective of the NMR is to map out either the number of protons or the number of carbons in a specific manner that will allow the interpreter to figure out the general structure of the compound and which functionality groups are attached to certain areas of the molecule. Since this method is nondestructive, the sample that is prepared can be used for later analysis (Cheremisinoff, 61). When trying to map out the protons, or the Hydrogen, a minimum of 0.5 grams of the sample is needed (Cheremisinoff, 62). On the other hand, when mapping out the Carbon a minimum of 1.0 grams of the sample is needed (Cheremisinoff, 62). Any gas, liquid or solid that can be dissolved in either CCl 4 , CH-Cl, acetone or DMSO to the one percent level or greater can be used in the NMR process (Cheremisinoff, 61).
