Kelley Slavish CHEM 103: Section 020 January 8, 2010; Lab 2 PROCEDURE Experiment 2: Density Part A: Calibration of the Graduated Cylinder Fill the graduated cylinder with water Using the pipet, adjust the meniscus to read exactly 20 mL Completely dry the outside surface of the cylinder & weigh the cylinder to 0.01 gram Record the weight Determine the volume of the graduated cylinder by using the known density of water Empty the cylinder and repeat the procedure Average the two volumes obtained Use the averaged value for the volume of the graduated cylinder in further experiments Part B: Determine the Density of an unknown metal Obtain an unknown and record it’s number on your data sheet Place some of the sample in your clean, dry, pre-calibrated 10 mL graduated cylinder Maker sure your sample does not go above the 10 mL mark Weigh the cylinder with the unknown metal to the nearest 0.01 gram, record the weight
