Unformatted text preview: Ten years ago, there were 33 million people living in poverty. Well ten years ago, there were fewer people. With an in crease in population and fewer jobs economically, it makes sense that the people living in poverty would be more now. How many states had and in crease in poverty rate compared to last year and WHY? 25 states had an increase. I believe this was due to issues in the construction industry boom. Houses were buildtlike crazy, and then economically, people couldn't buy them. Also there were some issues in manufacturing plants. What new programs have been initiated to combat poverty at State and Federal Levels. Some programs include increasing minimum wages, health care for those who can't get it, welfare, Medicaid....
