Diffusion Diffusion through tissues is described by Fick’s Law: = Area x Concentration gradient x Permeability Thickness Assumptions: 1.Permeability or solubility of gas in tissue 2.Inversely proportional to thickness 3.Distance: ↑ distance → ↓ rate diffusion 4.Proportional to area 1.Directly proportional to the concentration gradient (∆P) Physiologists use partial pressure because it allows direct comparisons with air and helps to establish a concentration gradient between alveoli, blood and tissue Generally constant
