Oxygen is transported in two ways: 1. Dissolved in the plasma (2% of total oxygen) Oxygen Bound in Plasma: The amount dissolved is proportional to the partial pressure of oxygen in the alveoli and plasma Normal arterial blood with a PO 2 = 100 mmHg contains 3 ml O 2 ∙ 1 L -1 blood Example Resting cardiac output = 5 L/min 5 L/min x 3 ml O 2 ∙ 1 L -1 blood = 15 ml/min Resting oxygen consumption = 250 ml/min Oxygen Transport in the blood

Oxygen is transported in two ways: 1.Bound to Hb 98% of oxygen in the body is carried by Hb Structure: Large complex protein with four globular protein chains surrounding a heme group (2 alpha and 2 beta chains) Four heme groups are identical: Each contains a carbon-hydrogen-nitrogen ring with an iron (Fe) in the center The center Fe can bind reversibly with one O 2 molecule Hb + O 2 HbO 2 Hemoglobin (Hb)
