EN222: Mechanics of Solids Homework 2: Virtual Work, Linear Elastic Constitutive Behavior Due Thursday February 14, 2002 Division of Engineering Brown University 1. Crack initiation and propagation in a solid is often modeled numerically by introducing a `cohesive interface’ into the solid. Our objective here is to extend the principle of virtual work so as to develop a basis for numerical simulations of cohesive interfaces. We will restrict attention to infinitesimal motions, to keep things simple. Let ¡ denote the region occupied by a solid in its unstressed reference configuration, and consider a boundary value problem with prescribed displacements on 1 ¡ and prescribed tractions on 2 ¡ . S denote a cohesive interface within the solid. In the unstressed reference configuration, the two material planes adjacent to S are in perfect contact. When the solid is deformed and loaded, the displacement and stress fields may be discontinuous across S , as the two material planes may separate.
